Lawns add a beautiful lushness to our landscape. Even a small patch will enhance flowerbeds and act as a focal point for the rest of your landscape. Here in the southeast we mainly have four types of turf grass: Fescue, Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede.
Fescue is the only cool season grass. If watered heavily in the summer months it will remain green all year. Often the heat of the summer will brown the blades and require over seeding each year. You may want to consider this as a temporary lawn.
Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede are considered warm season grasses. They will go dormant (turn golden) each winter.
All grasses must have at least six hours of sunlight each day to perform best.
A healthy turf grass will “choke out” weeds without much help from us. Weeds will show up in unhealthy patches of grass. As you work on removing them take a good look at the grass they are growing in. You may need to check the water conditions, look for insects or funguses. Keeping it healthy by cutting to the proper height will also help to choke out weeds.
All information given by Zone 7 should be considered a recommendation. We have worked hard over the last seven years experimenting with different products for lawns. The products we list have shown good results in the lawns we are familiar with. Every lawn has its own unique conditions and these should be considered when choosing fertilizers and weed control products. Always read and follow label instructions when applying any product to your lawn or landscape.
